At 40 you're probably pretty lackluster - your damage will get more savage as you get higher in level and build, in your case, your synergies up. As to upping damage, max out synergies, get +skills gear, and just generally learn the best ways to place your hammers (tip: if on PC you should be able to teleport on to an enemy and it'll land in your first hammer but if you have to do it manually, the target mob is a clock and you stand at 5oclock).
